Frequently Asked Questions on SEAMCAT

Note: This is a list of various Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) with regards to the installation of SEAMCAT software. Please have a look at the following to solve your problem. If the problem with installation persists, contact the ECO describing the problem and supplying screen shots of any error messages displayed during installation.

Q: Initialization of seamcat failed

Initialization of SEAMCAT not working can either be due to a new Java update or something went wrong with the setting file or for instance the webstart which stop working with the latest java update. Reasons can be multiple, often due to a third party software. It is recommended the following:

1) Try first, in your SEAMCAT folder to remove the settings.xml (in general you can clean up the other files or other folders– make sure that your local libraries and your local workspaces are saved elsewhere). By doing this clean up, it should work.

2) Second, if it does not work, please remove entirely the SEAMCAT folder. Download the .msi version and install SEAMCAT again if you have a windows operating system.

If the problem persists please contact seamcat@…

Q: When I install the .msi version (offline) the installer complains that another version of this product is already installed.

A: It means that you have already installed SEAMCAT as offline. It needs to be removed.
For this, go to start/settings/Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs, select SEAMCAT and remove it as shown below

Now you can install the latest version of SEAMCAT.

Q: How do I change the SEAMCAT home directory

A:

  1. go to file/configuration (1)
  2. click on “clear SEAMCAT Home selection” (2)
  3. click “ok” (3)

  1. close SEAMCAT
  2. open SEAMCAT, you will get the following window

Q: How do I install SEAMCAT on my PC

A: You simply need to click on the link provided on  www.seamcat.org and the program will automatically download necessary elements to your PC (during first installation you will be offered a choice of where to install Seamcat directory) and then will start itself. During this installation, normally a special Seamcat icon should be created on your desktop. Later you may launch SEAMCAT by simply clicking on that icon.

Each time the program is started on Internet connected PC, it will automatically check with the central SEAMCAT server whether new updates are available, and if yes, it will download them. This is so called Live Web Update feature, which ensures that you always run the latest SEAMCAT version. Another alternative is to download the .msi (microsoft software installer) so that you can keep an history of the version on your machine. Note that this alternative option is only available for microsoft operating system and that you need to update your version manually evrytime a new version is released.

Q: How should I run the SEAMCAT if I do not have Java installed on my PC

A: If you do not have previously installed Java Runtime Environment on your PC, it will be automatically installed during the first installation of SEAMCAT. Alternatively, you may yourself pre-install Java free of charge from the Sun website at  www.java.com.

Q: The installation has not been completed after I pressed the link

A: First of all, make sure that you have administrator rights on your PC, i.e. the right to install programmes, before pressing the SEAMCAT installation link. If the problem occurs when the user with administrator rights is trying to install software, please make sure that the Firewall is not set to block installation of new programmes. You may need to ask advice of your IT administrator on these points. If the problem with installation persists, please contact the ERO describing the problem and supplying screen shots of any error messages displayed during installation.

Q: After being transferred to Java web site nothing happened

A: If you have been transferred to Java web site, this means that your PC does not have Java Run Time Environment installed, which is needed for SEAMCAT to run. Normally the installation process would check whether you have the Java installed on your PC and would automatically take you to Java web site to download the free version of Java Runtime Enviroment and afterwards would proceed with installation of SEAMCAT. If the process has stopped, this could mean that either you do not have administrative rights to install new software on your PC or Firewall settings preclude you from doing so. Please see the answer to previous question for responsive action.

Q: SEAMCAT does not start anymore after that the automatic download was interupted

A: This issue may happen when the connection may be lost like when using WLAN. When this happen, some part of SEAMCAT is installed but not all of it and you need to remove SEAMCAT entirely from your machine. The complete procedure (for microsoft OS) is as follows:

  • Control Panel / Open “Java” under “General” open “Temporary Internet Files”
  • “Delete” all the files - Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs uninstall SEAMCAT
  • Then, go to seamcat.org and re-install SEAMCAT this time with a good connection

Q: Due to the automatic update of the SEAMCAT version on my computer I can not re-used the previous version.

Q: Due to the automatic update of the SEAMCAT version on my computer I can not re-used the previous version.
A: Every time a new version is released it is because a bug or an enhancement has been fixed/made. Using the on-line version, it is not possible to get the previous version. An alternative to have the old version is to install the off-line version. However, we do not recommend to use older versions (therefore the use of automatic update).
